Movement is crucial to a healthy life. My world these days. 😍 💪🏼💕 I'm cutting it close with the > 3-inch recommendation here. The first 12 hours haven't shown any connectivity challenges though, I'll keep you posted. Growing up it was hard for me to find a doctor that I felt could really talk to. I was nervous talking to someone with what felt like such a different life than me. I would allow myself to feel judged and like I wasn’t doing enough. The Omnipod 5 algorithm is a closed-loop system designed to automate insulin delivery for people with Type 1 Diabetes. The algorithm utilizes continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to calculate and adjust insulin dosing based on the individual’s glucose levels. My Story with Type 1 Diabetes and the Why Behind Hamlin Health Hey, I'm Hannah! I am a physician and I have Type 1 Diabetes. I am on a mission to spread education and insight about what a happy and healthy life with Type 1 Diabetes can look like. More info on Hamlin Health and what type of care we offer for people with T1D in Texas. 🎉 A few years ago I did a 200 plants in 30 day challenge and it was amazing. We kept a list and aimed for 200 different plant species. It really pushed me to try new foods and new recipes. It also helped me to get out of the routine vegetables I was repeating. It even brought me to new grocery stores. If your interested in mixing up your nutrition habits, challenge a friend to ‘200 plants in 30 days’ and see who can get there first! 🍏🍇🍒🍎🍐🥦🥬🥒🍅🍆🥑🫐🍍🍑🫒🥕🧄🍠

During strength training, the body requires energy to perform the exercises, which can cause a release of glucose from the liver into the bloodstream to provide energy for the muscles. Additionally, stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are released during strength training, which can cause insulin resistance and lead to a temporary increase in blood glucose levels.

On the other hand, during cardio exercises such as running, cycling, or swimming, the body uses up glucose for energy. As a result, blood glucose levels tend to decrease during and immediately after cardio exercise.

It's important to note that the effect of exercise on blood glucose levels can vary depending on several factors, including the intensity and duration of the exercise, insulin dosing and timing, carbohydrate intake, and individual differences in insulin sensitivity and glucose regulation. Therefore, people with Type 1 diabetes should work with their healthcare team to develop an individualized exercise plan that takes into account their unique needs and goals.

The amount of exercise recommended for a person with Type 1 diabetes is generally the same as for a person without diabetes, which is at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise per week, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines. This can be achieved through activities such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or jogging.

The ADA also recommends including strength training exercises at least two times per week, with a focus on major muscle groups. Additionally, people with Type 1 diabetes are encouraged to engage in regular physical activity throughout the day, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or going for a short walk after meals to help manage blood glucose levels.

However, it's important for people with Type 1 diabetes to consult with their healthcare team before starting or changing their exercise routine, as individualized recommendations may vary depending on factors such as current fitness level, blood glucose control, and any diabetes-related complications.

Studies Showing Benefits of Exercise in People with T1D.

1. "Exercise and Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus in Youth; Review and Recommendations" by Dr. Michael Riddell et al. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the benefits and risks of exercise for youth with Type 1 diabetes, and provides recommendations for safe and effective exercise.

2. "Effects of Exercise on Glucose Control and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Meta-Analysis" by Dr. Carla Giordano et al. This meta-analysis examines the impact of exercise on blood glucose control and cardiovascular risk factors in people with Type 1 diabetes, and suggests that exercise can improve both outcomes.

3. "The Effect of Resistance Training on Glycemic Control in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Meta-Analysis" by Dr. Guillaume Duclos et al. This meta-analysis looks at the impact of resistance training on blood glucose control in people with Type 1 diabetes, and suggests that resistance training can improve glycemic control.

4. "Exercise and Type 1 Diabetes: A Position Statement of the American Diabetes Association" by Dr. Sheri Colberg et al. This position statement from the American Diabetes Association provides guidelines for safe and effective exercise for people with Type 1 diabetes, including recommended blood glucose targets, insulin adjustments, and monitoring.

5. "Physical Activity/Exercise and Diabetes: A Position Statement of the American Diabetes Association" by Dr. Sheri Colberg et al. This position statement from the American Diabetes Association provides general guidelines for physical activity and exercise for people with diabetes, including Type 1 diabetes.
